Rosi Steinbach: Waldstück
18 May—22 June 2019

At the latest after the storms Xavier, Herwart and Friederike, one was reminded again that the forest is not self-evident and invulnerable. Bizarrely torn out roots and picturesque tree remains made me think of the gravestones in the form of tree stumps that can sometimes be found in old cemeteries.

Jungle, German forest, German romanticism, German oak, fairy tale forest, dying forest. The forest hides mysterious beings, it is a dangerous place. It's dark in the forest, you get lost there. In the forest, there are robbers. Ecosystem. In the forest you can find rest and relaxation. The secret life of the trees. Healing from the forest. Forest bathing is the new trend.

My tree stumps have been felled, they're worn out, their roots exposed. What remains of their long life, their strength, beauty and complexity, became shiny ceramic wall objects. Their secret lies in the past.

The latest wall objects refer to my work to complement a Renaissance wall piece from the Della Robbia workshop for the Grassi Museum. In the course of this project, I have dealt with the varied and imaginative decors borrowed from nature of the time. The finished devotional picture with an original Della Robbia Madonna with the parts I have added will be on display from June onwards in Leipzig's Grassi Museum of Applied Arts in the permanent exhibition Antiquity to Historicism.
