Claudia Piepenbrock: on hollows
6 September—26 October 2019

We are pleased to draw your attention to the work of the young artist Claudia Piepenbrock. It is her second solo appearance in the Josef Filipp Gallery. She is a master student and a graduate of the University of the Arts Bremen. In 2016 she received the prestigious Karin Hollweg Prize. Other notable solo exhibitions can be experienced at the Gerhard Marcks House in Bremen until November 17, 2019 and in the Cuxhaven Kunstverein from October 18 to November 22, 2019.

Claudia Piepenbrock creates impressive sculptural constellations of a specific physical presence, which combines lightness and weight, statics and dynamics. All characteristics of foam, the artist’s preferred material, become apparent: it is colorful, pliant, but steady when brought into upright position to form walls of a very sensual appearance. In three rooms of the gallery, Piepenbrock shows objects which were created in recent years. Together, the three presentations merge into a comprehensive exhibition.

The works of Claudia Piepenbrock at Josef Filipp are a particularly precise implementation of sculptural plasticity, sensual materiality and physicality, which create exhibitions as parallel spaces to everyday life’s reality. These heterotopias form topographies that both appeal to a sensually attune perception of space and visual objects while simultaneously and deliberately aiming for experiences of contingency to challenge institutionalised states of normalcy and orientation.
